Firefighters battle blazes after fierce fighting in central Myanmar. Several neighbourhoods were still smouldering on Friday after unrest between Buddhists and Muslims in the area erupted into violence. The clashes have stoked fears that last year's sectarian bloodshed is spreading into the country's heartland. At least one mosque, an Islamic religious school, several shops, a government office and both Buddhist and Muslim homes were set alight. The violence allegedly broke out after an argument between a Buddhist couple and the Muslim owners of a gold shop spiralled into a riot involving hundreds of people. Myanmar has declared martial law in four central townships. Twenty people, including a Buddhist monk, have been killed and dozens wounded since Wednesday.
