There was chaos at the Directorate of Elementary Education in Dehradun on Saturday after a confrontation between BJP MLA Umesh Sharma Kau and officials turned violent. Director Ajay Kumar Nautiyal sustained a serious head injury and was rushed to Coronation Hospital for treatment. Doctors later said his condition is stable. What Triggered the Dispute? According to officials, the controversy relates to a name change on a stone plaque installed at a Government Primary School campus in the Raipur block. The matter had reportedly been referred to the government for a decision at the Secretary level. Officials said no formal order had been issued so far. The MLA had earlier written to authorities regarding the issue. On Saturday (21 Feb 2026) around 11:30 am, he allegedly arrived at the director’s office with over two dozen supporters to discuss the matter. Scuffle Inside Office: Eyewitnesses said the discussion escalated into a heated argument. A scuffle broke out between departmental employees and the MLA’s supporters. During the chaos, Director Nautiyal was allegedly struck near his eye, suffering a serious injury. There are also allegations that chairs were thrown and office property was damaged. Conflicting Claims: Both sides have made counter-allegations. Director Nautiyal claimed the MLA and his supporters entered aggressively, abused him and attempted to force their way inside by locking the door. The MLA’s side alleged they were attacked by staff and that the gate was locked from outside during the altercation. Confusion remains over who locked the room during the incident. Staff Outrage, Demand Action: The episode has triggered anger among Education Department employees, who say disagreements could have been resolved administratively rather than through confrontation. Employee unions have demanded that an FIR be registered against those responsible and have warned of a strike if strict action is not taken.
