A phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when magma comes into direct contact with water inside a volcano's crater, triggering an explosive reaction that emits gas, steam, and sometimes magma itself, according to volcanologists. The alert for the Taal volcano, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) south of Manila, remains at level 1 on its five-tier scale, indicating a low level of unrest.
