The disaster on April 26, 1986, involved a meltdown of a reactor at the plant, causing an enormous leak of radioactive material and directly killing dozens of people.</p><p>Greenpeace commissioned a report in 2006, estimating that a final death toll may reach into the thousands as many more could eventually die from illnesses caused by exposure to high levels of radiation.
