Unmanned aircraft completes flight through UK public airspace

A Jetstream aircraft, dubbed the Flying Test Bed , last month became the first plane to fly unmanned through UK shared airspace, according to a BBC report. The 16-seat plane has been developed to be flown pilotless. It includes a cockpit camera that functions as an electronic eye , an infrared camera for emergency landings, an aircraft identification antenna and a central passenger cabin filled with powerful computers. The plane's electronic eye allows the plane to recognize cloud types and plot a course to avoid unfavorable weather. The airplane's 'sense and avoid' technology allows it to avoid unplanned mid-flight obstacles. It's infrared camera can be used to detect and avoid life to find safe landing areas. The project's director Lambert Dopping-Hepenstal expects to see pilotless airplanes operating in British airspace by the end of the decade.
